A contemporary replacement for Starex’s decades-old outdoor ‘BBQ’ set, this overhauled design is notable for its incorporation of Futurewood - a 100% recycled composite (made predominantly from plastic waste and sugarcane husks) produced as an all-weather, maintenance-free hardwood alternative. As the original design was unpopular with the joinery department due to its extensive use of Kwila (which was time-consuming to machine into planks and finish to a high standard), I explored other available options in the market that could provide time-savings and ensure longer life in outdoor conditions. Upon the selection of Futurewood as the best option, the whole design process was built around it, including scaling the set to fit the plank profiles available. The steel frames, built in the engineering department, also take half as long to build as those of the previous model/s, and allow for faster fixing of the planks in the dispatch & assembly department.
