C²
'C²' was the result of an architecture summer paper that explored contemporary co-working spaces and ways to facilitate a less regimented work environment. The definitive group project, under the moniker of ‘Altrspace’, speculated a new concept for a co-working business. Vacated urban spaces, such as offices, lofts and warehouses, are leased on a temporary basis as a haven for freelancers, startups, small businesses, independent contractors and travelling office nomads. Altrspace then hires out individual furnishings to the resident workers based on their needs. The ever-changing myriad of inhabitants necessitates the need for increased functionality and adaptability. With these qualities in mind, each member of the group created their own unique design solution for the hypothetical business model.
The C² system represents the baseline model for the more transient, short-term worker, such as a jet-setting freelancer that works entirely from a single laptop. As a work or relaxation space for a single person, the individual ‘squares’ can be relocated, customised and personalised as they wish. The form defines a personal workspace, creating an ‘illusion of territory’ and implied privacy without isolating workers from their peers.
